Why The Mandiaka Laughs

$ 14.95

Description :

Why The Mandiaka Laughs! is a tale about personal beauty, self-worth and hope for each new day of your life.  It is the story of the Mandiaka, a mythical African bird who is transformed by an encounter with its creator at a moment of sadness and rejection.

It is a wonderful conversation starter with children about beauty and worth and what we can do to make ourselves more beautiful and how to value ourselves more each day.  It is a hopeful story about the beauty that can be discovered in us individually and collectively each and every day.

About :

Garry is a writer, speaker, and minister with 43 years of experience working to improve the quality of lives of the people he has served and touches. The author of four books, three written for children and one book of poetry. His children's books I began writing at age 16 and haven't stopped writing since.

I wrote the stories “Tooma and the Seven Truths” and “Why The Mandiaka Laughs” before I knew about the deficit in African American writers and illustrators published works. I wrote these stories because I know that culture is communicated through the stories we tell and the stories we remember.

We cannot hope to pass on to the next generation our values without well written and simple tales that reflect their faces, affirms life as part of a community, instructs their lives and informs their values and actions. Each of the stories creates an opportunity for the parent or the caregiver to connect with the child through reading the story to them and discussing its meaning.

Each story has a value at its center and as such are fables or moral stories designed to teach truths that the child will remember and carry with them into adulthood. Perhaps each child will love the story so much that they want to read it to their children or even begin to imagine and write and illustrate stories themselves.

I write to touch and to empower the heart and soul of the generation of children and grandchildren who will follow us.

About: David Myles Robinson has always had a passion for writing. During the late 1960's and early 1970's, while in college, Robinson worked as a free-lance writer for several magazines and was a staff writer for a weekly minority newspaper in Pasadena, California, called The Pasadena Eagle. However, as he himself admits, upon graduating from San Francisco State University, he decided against the ‘starving writer' route and went to law school, at the University of San Francisco School of Law. It was there that he met his wife, Marcia Waldorf. After graduating from law school in 1975, the two moved to Honolulu, Hawaii and began practicing law. Robinson became a trial lawyer, specializing in personal injury and workers' compensation law. Waldorf eventually became a District Court and ultimately a Circuit Court judge. Upon retiring in 2010, Robinson completed his first novel, Unplayable Lie, which was published by BluewaterPress LLC, in 2010. He has since published four more novels, three of which are legal thrillers set in Honolulu: Tropical Lies, Tropical Judgments, Tropical Doubts, and Tropical Deception. His other two novels are The Pinochet Plot and Son of Saigon. Robinson has also published a book of short travel stories, Conga Line on the Amazon. Robinson and Waldorf divided their time between Honolulu and their second home in Taos, NM for seven years before finally deciding to see what it's like to be full-time mainlanders again. They now live in Taos, where Robinson can pursue his non-writing passions of golf, ski, and travel.
